Miss Devon's Choice

Sally Britton is a bestselling indie author, with four historical romance novels. She contributes to the Historical Hussies blog and teaches a young writer’s class at her local library. Sally received her BA in English from Brigham Young University. She’s always read voraciously and eclectically.

Sally started her writing journey at the tender age of fourteen on an electric typewriter and she’s never looked back. Sally lives in Arizona with her crime-fighting husband, four children, and their dog. She loves researching, hiking, and geeking out over her favorite books and movies.

A scarred and lonely viscount and an independent young woman are forced into an arranged marriage. What hope do they have for a happily ever after?

Rebecca Devon lives under the severe eye of her aunt and the iron will of her father. Though she wears what she is told and befriends the people they choose for her, she spends every moment longing to do as she wishes. Knowing freedom will only come through marriage, her hopes for a happy union are stolen away when her father arranges her marriage to a complete stranger.

Christian Hundley, Lord Easton, has learned the hard way that English society won't accept a person who looks or behaves differently than their ideal. He has hidden himself away from scornful eyes for years, until his aging grandfather takes matters in hand and finds Christian a bride. Knowing he must agree to the marriage, Christian shields his heart. If the whole of society cannot accept him, why should his bride?

Rebecca knows she must have love in her life, but Christian is convinced there is nothing so fraught with danger and pain as entrusting one’s heart to another. Rebecca does everything she can to change his mind, but Christian is determined to remain aloof. Can an arranged marriage ever be anything other than a business partnership?

While this is the fifth book in the Regency romance series, Branches of Love, it can be read as a stand-alone romance.

Snippet:

“You will be titled, wealthy, and exert influence where you choose. I will leave you to your books, your friends, whatever it is you wish to occupy your time with and you will be a proper wife to one of my standing.”
“That is what you expect from me?” Rebecca asked softly. “All that you want? And what are the advantages for you, Christian? A pliable wife?”
He actually laughed. The sound, dry and without humor, made her flinch.
“I don’t hope for that much. My advantage, perhaps the only one, is that I have a wife who clearly understands this arrangement. I asked for this match. I asked for a wife who only cared for my title. It doesn’t matter that it’s you. It wouldn’t matter if it was another.”
He continued speaking, glaring at her now, “You agreed to this marriage, under these circumstances. How could you think I would want more?”
Something inside Rebecca cracked, her eyes burned, and she opened her mouth to shout, I never agreed to anything! But she couldn’t. He might think nothing of wounding her, but she had seen just enough of him that she began to understand. There were scars on his heart as well as upon his body. She would not create more.

As the eighth earl of Kellworth, Gareth is accustomed to getting what he wants. Then he encounters a woman he suspects is from the future--a utopian future that he feels compelled to see. He intends to get what he wants, but it will involve dealing with fae magic. And that could lead to disaster--for his heart.

Dr. Catherine Ryan is drawn to the handsome guest at Twickenham Manor, with his odd combination of childish excitement and old eyes that have seen too much pain. She loses her heart to him before she discovers the truth of when he’s from. Now she faces the biggest decision of her life!

Snippet:

"I will now introduce you to something called a zipper.” The valet held up a pair of blue trousers with faded material.
“Has someone already worn these?” Gareth curled his lip in disgust.
“No, my Lord. It is considered fashionable to wear jeans—that is what these are called.” He continued, “to wear jeans that have been distressed.”
“So it’s fashionable here to wear the castoff closing of a common laborer?”
“Some of the most expensive styles have holes in them, by design, my Lord. As I said, comfort is frequently the key unless one is attending a special event and then all comfort is cast to the wind. These jeans—please remember to use the correct term—are of an expensive designer brand. ’Tis made of cotton, and you will appear to fit right in.”
Gareth peered more closely at the fabric, amazed at the perfectly straight stitches. He pinched the waist of the trousers between his fingers. The fabric was softer than he’d expected.
“Machines now make these, my Lord.”
“Hence the consistency.”
“Yes, my Lord.” Geoffrey’s voice pitched a little higher as his enthusiasm grew. “Now, let me show you how a zipper works. It has greatly increased the ease of dressing and has done away with much of the need for awkward buttons.” He pulled on a tab, and the trousers opened. The valet pulled up on the tab, and the opening disappeared.
“Let me try that.” Gareth took the garment and studied the teeth-like metal parts that held the two sections of the fabric together. “Clever.”
“If you will now put them on, my Lord. You may find it easier if you sit.” The valet indicated a chair. “They are close-fitting, so I would suggest you exercise caution the first time you close the zipper lest you pinch anything . . . tender.”
Gareth chuckled at the man’s delicacy. “If dressing is so much simpler now, why are there still valets?” he asked as he tried to slide one foot into the trousers.
“We are nearly obsolete, my Lord.”

Gareth had to maneuver the fabric in order to get his foot through the narrow leg opening. He shot the valet a flat look. “How does this make it easier to dress?”

Autumn Wings

Stan published his first book at age 5, when he managed to win a local writing contest for the library.
He's matured (slightly) since then, and has switched from writing about a boy and his dog, to clean contemporary romance, murder mysteries, and light fantasy/sci-fi.
Along with his wife,  9 (and counting) children, and a ninja cat, he inhabits a place with a pair of national parks in his backyard.
He considers himself really rather blessed.

Jim Sharp is the only widower in the senior class of Mendon State University. Still reeling from the tragedy that claimed the love of his life, he struggles to pick up the pieces and close his heart forever to love.

When an otherworldly encounter places him squarely in the path of new love, Alex sees no way to give his crushed heart away a second time.

His wife, however, has other plans.

Snippet:

When I asked her about it later, my wife told me she regretted dying childless and leaving me alone. I wasn’t in a position to fix either of those. She, however, had other plans.
A year ago, my marriage, my plans, and my will to live ended with three seconds of freefall and an abrupt stop. I’d watched my wife’s death so many times in my dreams that I no longer woke screaming. No, all I had left was numb darkness; because really, what else mattered now?

After all, it hadn’t been my fault.

Fleeing an unwanted engagement, a young harpist follows her music passion to London. Becoming entangled with a handsome violinist who seems too aristocratic for a working-class musician may be more problematic than dodging her erstwhile fiancé, sleeping in the streets, or staying alive when a madman targets her for murder.

Snippet:

Susanna smiled. “Good morning, Mrs. Miller. It’s Susanna Dyer.”
Mrs. Miller’s eyes widened. “Well bless my soul, so it is. I haven’t seen you around much—I heard you were poorly.”
“Not as ‘poorly’ as my aunt and uncle would like you to believe. I have some things I need to sell.” She showed the woman her clothes, pins, and the miniature. “I’m not interested in letting go of the portrait, of course, but I thought perhaps the frame would be of value?”
Mrs. Miller looked them all over. Under the woman’s scrutiny, the articles Susanna had brought suddenly looked shabby and worthless. Kindly, the woman asked, “Why do you need money, Miss Susanna?”
“I need to buy passage on the mail coach.”
Mrs. Miller studied her. “I see. Your aunt and uncle aren’t treating you well, are they?”
Exhaustion and fear and uncertainty drained her composure. Tears pricked her eyes. She looked down to cover signs of her emotion. “Please, is any of this worth anything?”
“Is this your mother’s wedding band?” Mrs. Miller picked up the gold and sapphire ring and held it into the light. Tears escaped. Susanna hastily brushed them away and nodded. “It’s all I have of hers—and this miniature.”
“I think we can work out something.”
“Thank you. And please, if anyone asks, you haven’t seen me. They can’t know where I’ve gone.”
Mrs. Miller patted her hand. “I understand, my dear. You have my silence.”
Susanna left the shop with a lighter portmanteau and a few coins wrapped up in a handkerchief and tucked into her stays. A few hours later, Susanna sat atop a mail coach and offered a prayer that she would reach London safely, procure employment, and find a place to stay.
“And,” she added to her whispered prayer, “if it isn’t too much to ask, a guardian angel would be very helpful about now.”

The MacBrides - Logan and RJ

J. L. Petersen lives in Denver with her husband. She finds inspiration in her adopted state of Colorado and her belief love is the most powerful positive emotion we can experience.

Logan, the eldest of the MacBride clan, is thrilled at his brother Clay's pending nuptials to Sandy. But when Sandy's sister RJ arrives at the family's ranch, Logan's world is turned upside down.

However, the sisters' shared past has created scars and barriers against love testing Logan's ability to push aside his need and patience to win RJ's trust and ultimately her unwavering love.

Snippet:

Sandy came around the vehicle and caught sight of Logan also. “Oh.” Looking a little shamefaced, she greeted him. “Morning, Logan.”

Logan stood up straight and tried to control his grin. “Sandy. RJ. Looks like you were at it again, Sandy.”

RJ was ready to come to Sandy’s defense, but Sandy just grinned at him. “You know I can’t help myself.”

Logan just shook his head. Then he grinned at RJ. “Are you the maniac that taught her to drive?”

Stiffening at his comment she was about to blast him with a few choice words when Sandy laid a hand on her arm. “He’s just joking. Drives him and Clay nuts when I drive the UV.”

Logan watched as Sandy tried to calm her sister’s temper down. The woman was as prickly as a porcupine. She might be a looker, but he liked his women with a sweeter temperament.

RJ tried to smile. The man was always studying and judging her. It was obvious he found her lacking in some way. She wanted to tell him to go to hell, but for Sandy’s sake she would try. “Yes, I taught her to drive and it seems she got us here just fine.”

“I’ll give you that,” he acknowledged before turning back to Sandy. “But I see why Clay won’t let you out on the range.”

Sandy laughed. “Seriously, you guys are so thickheaded. Come on, RJ, I want to show you the shop.”

Logan caught the subtle look Sandy sent him. Assuming it meant she still wanted him to give her a tour and try to talk her into staying he sighed. “Sandy, I know you want to show RJ around the shop. But once the shop opens, I was thinking I could give RJ a tour of the ranch.”

RJ narrowed her eyes at the offer. But when Sandy acted surprised and gushed that RJ should go and have a good time, she realized they planned this. Doing an internal eye roll, she decided to let Sandy have her way and agreed.
