Soul Mirrors

My love of storytelling traces back to my step-mother, who spun wonderful fantasy stories when I was child. I finished my first novel at sixteen. That first attempt was terrible, but taught me quite a bit about story construction. Though I would start numerous other projects in the following years, I wouldn't actually complete another book for another 21 years.
I wasn't idle in that time, though. I earned a degree in engineering, married the love of my life, worked as a semi- truck driver crisscrossing the country, moved from Texas to North Dakota and then came back home.
It's been a fun and interesting journey. I really enjoy engineering, but writing was my first passion, and I'm excited to share it with you.
I currently live in West Texas with my wife and our two adorable (but weird) cats.

"No one knows how human genetics evolved to create Mirrors. No one knows how the evidence of a criminal’s last horrendous act can be confirmed in a single gaze of a child’s silvered eyes. But just because science can’t explain something doesn’t mean it can’t be used, and this gift is simply too valuable to ignore.

Twins Thomas and Ashley Ross have grown up knowing they would be used as Mirrors for the “good” of humanity. When their powers mature at age twelve, they are taken weekly to fulfill their role. By reliving the most heinous crimes from a perpetrators’ perspective, they alone can assure that no innocent people will be executed, and that the worst offenders are not set free due to lack of evidence.

Justice is not without cost, however. Taking on the memories of others is a destructive process, one that quickly consumes the children involved until most take their own lives. As despair threatens to drown Thomas and Ashley, a distant hope keeps them from succumbing: If they can make it to their eighteenth birthday, their contract with the government will be fulfilled. Changing views on the morality of their role threatens to tear them apart, but the twins struggle to cling to each other and try to construct a fragile life above the weekly flood of horrors.

As their work takes it toll, however, a new question emerges: does survival even matter when you’re already broken beyond repair?"

And now, a PeaceWrites Interview with Wiley A Haydon III!
When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author?
My step-mother loved to tell stories, and her ability to create fanciful tales at a moment’s notice is what ultimately led me to start writing. I finished my first novel at sixteen, but knew almost immediately that it wasn’t worth trying to publish. The experience pulled me in, though, and I knew I’d keep working at it until I created something worth sharing.
How many books do you have out, and do you have a favorite?
Soul Mirrors is my first book, so it would win favorite by default, but this one will be hard to top. I have been working on this book for years, and I’ve abandoned it several times. Never because I hated it, but because I felt I couldn’t do the story justice. I had to grow as a writer so that it could finally meet my expectations.
My wife also loves this novel. Her desire to help me finish it was a major reason we ended up together. That makes it particularly hard to top.
Do you have a favorite author?
I’ve loved the fantasy genre ever since I first picked up The Lord of the Rings in sixth grade, so it’s not really surprising that I devour everything Brandon Sanderson writes. I’m constantly awed by the worlds, characters, and magic systems he creates. I’m also awed that most of his novels are meshing into this grand overall plot that is playing out behind the scenes in each book.
What is one piece of advice you could give to a new author that you wish someone had passed to you?
That writing is not a solo endeavor. When I started out as a teenager, I naively had this image of writers pounding away at the keyboard, creating a masterpiece, and then handing off a polished manuscript with the barest assistance from others.
I won’t say that this doesn’t happen at all, but I can definitely say that this doesn’t happen to ME.
I’ve spent years working on Soul Mirrors, and I have received help from anyone I could convince. This assistance has come in the form of alpha readers providing feedback, experts offering specialized knowledge, editors cleaning up story and text, and everything else imaginable.
My experience shows that though writing can be solo art, writing well cannot.
Do you have any pets?

My wife and I have two cats: a calico named Hobbes, and a black cat named Moria. When Hobbes was little, she would switch between lethargic and hyperactive without notice, so she is named after the titular tiger from Bill Waterson’s comic strip. As she’s aged, she’s mellowed considerably and is now larger, fluffier, and lazier. Moria is named after Tolkien’s mines because of her coloration. She likes to sleep with us at night, but her favorite activity is licking the inside of plastic bags. All in all, our cats are adorable and weird.

The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper

Continuing the adventure that ended in Britain just a short while ago, cousins Adam and Justin Sinclair, with their friend Kim Maleka, are now hunting for the third Stone of Power, one of seven mysterious stones lost centuries ago. The third stone might be located in an ancient city, hidden in the depths of the Mexican jungle. When their small plane crashes in the jungle, Adam, Justin, Kim, and James are rescued by an uncontacted tribe. James, who is wounded, must stay behind as the kids, with only a young boy, Tukum, as their guide, make their way through the dense and dangerous jungle to find the city. River rafting on a crocodile-infested river and evading predators are just part of this hazardous task.

Of course, their old adversary Dr. Khalid is close behind as the kids press on in search of the lost city of stone gods. But he is not the worst of their problems. This time Adam will clash with a terrible enemy who adopts the persona of an evil Aztec god, Tezcatlipoca, and is keen to revive the ancient tradition of human sacrifice. Adam, Justin, and Tukum must play a dreadful ball game of life and death and maybe survive. Will they emerge alive from the jungle? Will Dr. Khalid find the third Stone of Power before they do?

I am a children’s author, but up until a few years ago, I was a journalist and editor. Something rather unexpected sparked my new career as an author—a family trip to Egypt with my mother and two young nephews. We had a great time and I thought I’d write them a short story as a different kind of souvenir…. Well, one book and a planned book series later, I had changed careers. I have now published Book 3 (The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper) in my MG adventure series Chronicles of the Stone, with many awards for the first book, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, and a few for Book 2, The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, and one already for Book 3! I also teach online novel writing for aspiring authors and I find that very satisfying. Relaxation time finds me enjoying something creative or artistic, music, books, theatre or ballet. I love doing research for my book series. I love animals and have written two animal rescue stories. I have two adorable (naughty) little dogs called Chloe and Pumpkin, and a beautiful black cat called Bertie.

Snippet 6

1.     A hoarse coughing came from the branch above their hiding place. Adam glanced upward and froze in fear. A pair of huge yellow eyes stared at him. A jaguar was watching. The animal made a low guttural sound in its throat. Was it a growl? Did jaguars purr? A horrible thought struck him. Had Smoking Mirror shape-shifted into jaguar form so he could follow them? Was the man that powerful?

1890 Nebraska

For schoolmarm Amanda Cordell, Christmas Eve means getting through the special program she and her pupils have put together for the townsfolk in Langdon. And even though she has vowed to not set eyes on handsome Calvin Hunsaker, it becomes inevitable when his incorrigible son needs her help. Everyone knows how bitter Calvin is over his wife's sudden death, and somehow Amanda senses that he sees her the same way, as the spineless, helpless socialite she used to be.

Calvin Hunsaker is determined to ignore the feeling of attraction stirring inside him for the new schoolmarm, even if she is the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. But she's here to pick up the pieces after her brother and sister-in-law's untimely deaths and raise their two youngsters, not bedazzle him with the same charms his first wife possessed. Better to bundle up and head out of this one-room schoolhouse the second the program's ends.

But a winter storm and two mischievous boys have other plans, and Amanda and Calvin's plans to avoid each other go awry when Calvin is stranded at Amanda's house over the Christmas holiday. Will there be joy and thanksgiving in their future or will the winter blues descend on them once again?"

Snippet:

The two boys scampered up the ladder to the loft, leaving the girls to play quietly with their dolls by the fire.
Puzzled, Rachel breathed out, “Well! I suppose we scared them off. At least we still have the girls as chaperones.”
She expected Calvin to laugh or at least smile. Instead, he slowly approached her and took her hands in his. “Do we need chaperones, Rachel?”
Her mouth went dry. She didn’t know what to say. Yet she couldn’t tear her eyes away from his mesmerizing cobalt blue gaze.
He lifted a hand to cup her cheek and added almost as a whisper, “I don’t know about you, but for me, the answer is yes.”
A thousand sensations vibrated through her in that moment: the thrill of his words, the wonder of his touch, the softening light turning gray, the hum of the girls’ play, and the crackle of the warm fire. Even the whooshing sound of the snow that she thought they would all be used to hearing by now. She heard and felt every detail as if it were being magnified by an unseen force.
She whispered back, “I think it might be yes for me, too.”
And with a shuddering breath, his lips landed on hers.

An Unexpected Kiss

Cindy Roland Anderson is an Amazon best selling author who writes clean, contemporary romance with a combination of humor, romantic tension and some pretty great kissing scenes. She and her husband live in northern Utah, and are parents to five children, and grandparents to six adorable grandchildren. She is a registered nurse and has worked in the NICU as well as the newborn nursery. She loves to read, almost as much as she loves writing. And she loves chocolate…probably a little too much.

Snippet:

The line moved forward, and Lucy could feel the warmth radiating from the tent. Neither of them spoke again until they’d made it inside.
Cole looked around and frowned. “At least now I know where everyone buys their Christmas decorations. Snow Valley really goes all out, don’t they?”

“I know. Isn’t it great.”

He eyed her skeptically. “If you say so.”

“What’s not to like?” They made their way to one of the booths that had beautiful handmade quilts and wall hangings.

“I’m just not that into Christmas.”

Lucy stopped and stared at him. “How can you not be into Christmas? It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”

“Not for me. It’s my least favorite holiday.”

“Do you have your stethoscope with you?”

Puzzled, he shook his head. “No. Why do you need it?”

“I just wanted to verify you have a heart.”

Cole smiled. “That was actually kind of funny.”

“I’m serious. How can you not like Christmas?” It occurred to her that he may have grown up in poverty. Maybe that’s why he hated it. “Is it because you never got anything as a child?” she asked hesitantly.

He snorted a laugh. “Nope. My parents made sure everyone knew how much money we had by the elaborate gifts they gave me and to one another each year.”

“Christmas is about more than getting stuff.” She pointed out a beautiful wall hanging depicting the nativity. “What about the birth of the Savior?”

“I’m not a heathen, Lucy.” His eyes softened. “Believe it or not, I’m a believer who actually goes to church regularly and not just on Christmas Eve.”

“There may be hope, then.”

“Hope for what?”

She reached out and took his gloved hand in hers, and led him back outside the tent. “I’m going to save you from becoming the only world’s living heart donor.”
